Pre-conference workshops – ATBH  2023

Three hours sessions will be offered as preconference workshops on 22nd November, 2023. Attendees may choose to attend one morning session and/or one afternoon session for additional fees. Registration for preconference workshops will be on first come first serve basis through the conference registration link.

Policy change is fundamental to the successful implementation of interprofessional education and collaborative practice, particularly at the systems level. Morning Session
Pearls of Leadership Wisdom for Interprofessional Practice and Care Dr Keith Adamson (Canada) Dr Joanne Maxwell (Canada) This workshop will share the results of a scoping and literature review of leadership knowledge and skills required for leading interprofessional teams within healthcare settings. The workshop will also provide experiential activities for leaders managing interprofessional teams on change management, team building, design and development of models of care, patient safety and risk, and patient and family centred care (PFCC). Pearls of wisdom will be shared in each one of these domains. Morning Session
The Scott Reeves ‘in memoriam’ workshop on Writing for Publication Dr Jill Thistlethwaite(Australia) Dr Andreas Xyrichis (United Kingdom), and Dr Liz Anderson (United Kingdom) Writing for publication in health professions education is an important skill; essential for evidence-guided practice and education; for broad dissemination of research, evaluation and innovation; and for raising the quality of healthcare education. However, for both novice and experts alike, writing for publication can be a challenging experience as competition for publication is fierce and the standards in the field continue to rise. In this interactive workshop journal editors share their experiences and knowledge of the field of publishing, consider the art of writing and discuss the submission process and its aftermath. The workshop aim is to provide authors and potential authors with a better understanding of what makes a good paper, where the common pitfalls lie with respect to writing and submitting papers, and what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ of the publication process. The workshop will also cover planning research and evaluation studies with a view to publication, particularly in the Journal of Interprofessional Care but also with reference to other journals. Patient Safety: Interprofessional Simulation Education (IPSE) the WAY forward Dr Lulu Sherif (India) Dr Amanda Wilford (United Kingdom) This interactive workshop is aimed at any healthcare professional and/or academic and/or technologist who is interested in implementing interprofessional simulation education (IPSE) to promote and maintain the quality of safe patient care in all contexts e.g. hospital and community . This workshop will be of interest to those who have already integrated IPSE into their curricula or practice from a patient safety perspective. Afternoon Session
Accreditation and regulation of interprofessional education (IPE): strategies and tools to address your agenda Dr Marie-Andree Girard (Canada) Dr Ruby Grymonpre (Canada), Dr Cornelia Mahler (Germany), and Dr John Gilbert (Canada) Accreditation, as an external assessment process, has a significant influence on the quality of education for health/social service professionals. It is a complex process distinct from licensing. Accreditation is one proposed mechanism to ensure the quality of Interprofessional Education (IPE) for health/social service professionals and, as such, has been identified by WHO as a National Health Workforce Accounts’ indicator. (Standard 3-06 ‘Accreditation of IPE’ [WHO, 2017]). The facilitators will present participants two main perspectives on accreditation of IPE. Afternoon Session
Building Interprofessional Collaborative Practice: One brick at a time Dr Jane Frost (Australia) Effective Inter-Professional Collaborative Practice (IPCP) enhances patient safety. It relies on a mutual understanding of roles.However, health disciplines are often taught in silos and inter professional collaboration is often hierarchical. This workshop will allow all participants to participant equally in creating a shared understanding of Inter-professional collaborative practice.Inter professional collaborative practice is linked with increased patient safety. This workshop will showcase a technique that can bring teams together to develop a common understanding of IPCP. Afternoon Session

Biography:

Professor Asmaa Al-Thani is the Vice President of Medical and Health Sciences, the Director of the Biomedical Research Center (BRC) and a Professor of Virology at the Biomedical Sciences Department, Qatar University.  Professor Althani is also an Adjunct Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.

Professor Al-Thani’s portfolio articulates a record of accomplishments in establishing the academic and research infrastructure for health and medical sciences at Qatar University, pertaining her roles as the Founding Dean of the College of Health Sciences (2016) and the Founding Director of BRC (2014).  Professor Al-Thani has an active role in national landscape of medical research through serving as the Vice Chairperson of the Qatar Biobank Board, Chairperson of the National Qatar Genome Committee and establishing National Reference laboratory-COVID19 Unit.  In addition, she is the founding chair for the Empower Generation Consortium (EGC), which comprises several projects that enhance the national capacities in health and medical sciences.

Professor Al-Thani has a leading research portfolio, with over than 120 published papers in peer-reviewed international journals and around 34 internal and external research grants and 2 patents.  She is a reviewer for several scientific journals and conferences, and currently a member of the American society for Microbiology.

Her accomplishments have been recognized through several awards, including the Astrolabi Award from WCMC-Q (2020), QS- Reimagine Oscar in Education, gold in Life Sciences and the silver in best university-employer relationship for the years 2018-2020.   She also received the State Encouraging Award in the Medical Sciences and Nursing (2017), Sheikh Hummaid Bin Rashid Award for Culture and Sciences (2006), Al-Jasra Cultural Club –Qatar (2008), Qatar University Outstanding Faculty Service Award (2012), the College of Arts and Sciences Research Award (2012) and the Arab Paediatric Medical Research Award (2015).
